What Does Sawadee Mean? The Wai Greeting Explained

Sawadee (Thai: สวัสดี, also Sawasdee or Sawatdee) is the Thai greeting for “hello” and “welcome”. It is accompanied by the wai: the palms are pressed together in front of the chest with a slight bow. The higher the hands, the greater the respect.

Welcome: a warm greeting for every guest.
Respect: appreciation for the person opposite.
Gratitude: the wai also says “thank you” and “goodbye”.

Good to know: In Thailand, welcome figures like this greet guests in hotels, restaurants and shops. The Sawadee Lady is a secular motif – not a religious figure – and therefore suits any type of business.
